1985-1988 Tenured Professor of Electronics at the Secondary School.
1988-2001 University Researcher, Faculty of Engineering, Reggio Calabria.
1996 Set up a Raman Spectroscopy Laboratory at the University of Reggio Calabria.
1998 Scientific Coordinator of the Research Unit of Reggio Calabria in the Research Program of Relevant National Interest entitled "Detectors and optical components for astrophysics based on CVD diamond" (PRIN 1998).
2001-2007 Associate Professor of General Physics at the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria
2001 Member of the Scientific and Organizing Committee of the XVII GNSR 2001 Conference of the “National Group of Raman Spectroscopy” (Reggio Calabria, 14-16 May 2001).
2002 Editor of the volume entitled “GNSR2001: State of Art and Future Development in Raman Spectroscopies and Related Techniques”, G. Messina and S. Santangelo Eds, IOS Press 2002.

2022 to date: President of the Evaluation Unit of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria.

Prof. Messina’s research activity initially concerned the study of coherent phenomena in electronic spin resonance. Subsequently, he worked on Monte Carlo simulation of Elecron Beam Lithography processes. The most recent research activity mainly concerned the spectroscopic characterization of micro- and nano-structured materials for electronic, optoelectronic and sensor applications, in particular carbon nanotubes, amorphous carbon, synthetic diamond, graphene and 2D materials.

Prof. Messina is the author of over one hundred and forty publications in international journals and numerous communications at International and National Conferences.
