Giovanni Malara is an Associate Professor at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Energia, Ambiente e Materiali (DICEAM) of the Università degli Studi “Mediterranea” di Reggio Calabria, Italy. He holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, both earned with honors, from the same university. Malara completed his Ph.D. in Marine Engineering in 2011.
Malara’s academic career includes various research and teaching positions at Università Mediterranea, progressing from post-doctoral fellowships to his current role as Associate Professor, a position he attained in July 2023. He has been active in teaching since 2008, covering subjects such as Coastal Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, and Marine Renewable Energy. He has also been involved in supervising Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. students.
His research expertise lies in the fields of mechanics of extreme sea waves and wave energy devices. His work has resulted in the publication of over 70 articles in international journals and conference proceedings.
Malara has participated in several international research projects funded by European programs, such as FP7 and Horizon 2020, focusing on wave energy conversion and marine renewable energy. He has also collaborated with institutions like Rice University and Columbia University in various research initiatives. His involvement in technology transfer includes working with Wavenergy.it, a spin-off company from Università Mediterranea, on projects related to wave energy exploitation.
