Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (21/09/2026 - 11/12/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Knowledge of numerical methods for structural analysis and in particular of the finite element method applied to trusses, beam systems, two-dimensional elements, shells, in static and dynamic conditions and in the linear regime. Knowledge of structural analysis software (SAP2000): linear static analysis, modal dynamic analysis, step-by-step dynamic analysis.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the main structural mechanics theories: tension analysis, deformation analysis, constitutive laws, principle of virtual works, resolutions of isostatic and hyperstatic beam and truss systems.

Teaching Methods

The various theoretical topics of the course will be developed starting from basic knowledge of structural mechanics, always referring to potential real applications of the studied theories.
During exercises with the software for structural analysis, students will have the opportunity to use the software during classroom exercises by following step by step the operations to be performed that the teacher will show.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test with questions on the topics covered in class and on the assigned practical exercises. All topics covered during the lessons may be the subject of a question.

The final grade will be attributed according to the following evaluation criterion:

30 cum laude: complete, in-depth and critical knowledge of the topics, excellent language skills, complete and original interpretative ability, full ability to autonomously apply knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

28 - 30: complete and in-depth knowledge of the topics, excellent language skills, complete and effective interpretative ability, able to autonomously apply the knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

24 - 27: knowledge of the topics with a good degree of mastery, good language skills, correct and confident interpretative ability, good ability to correctly apply most of the knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

20 - 23: adequate knowledge of the topics but limited mastery of the same, satisfactory language skills, correct interpretative ability, more than sufficient ability to autonomously apply the knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

18 - 19: basic knowledge of the main topics, basic knowledge of technical language, sufficient interpretative ability, sufficient ability to apply the basic knowledge acquired;

Insufficient: does not have acceptable knowledge of the topics covered during the course

Texts

Meccanica delle strutture vol.1-2, autore: Leone Corradi Dell'Acqua, McGraw-Hill

Contents

1) Theoretical lessons

- References to structural mechanics (elastic equilibrium problem, differential equation of the elastic line, principle of virtual works).

- Matricial method for the analysis of trusses.

- Finite element formulation of truss structures.

- Finite element formulation of beams and beam systems (Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko).

- Notes on the theory of plates and plates (Kirchoff and Mindlin).

- Finite element formulation of plane two-dimensional elements. Membrane behavior and flexural behavior (Kirchoff and Mindlin). Usage of plane finite elements for modeling shells, flat elements with "drilling" degree of freedom.

- Notes on finite element formulation of three-dimensional solids.

- Isoparametric elements.

- Notes on Gaussian integration for the generation of stiffness matrices in the finite element method.

- Application of thermal loads in the finite element method.

- Finite elements for dynamic applications: mass matrix ("consistent" and "lumped").

2) Exercise with structural analysis software

- Construction of numerical models for structural analysis.

- Import of complex structural models from geometric modeling software.

- Linear static analysis of buildings (for vertical loads, static analysis equivalent to earthquakes).

- Modal dynamic analysis.

- "Step-by-step" linear dynamic analysis.

- Modeling of dissipation devices such as fluid viscous dampers.
