Overview

Date/time interval

Ciclo Annuale Unico (21/09/2026 - 28/05/2027)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Knowledge and understanding
The student will have to acquire the ability to identify the most suitable materials and the most effective elementary structural calculation schemes

Applying knowledge and understanding
The student must be able to apply the knowledge acquired to design of mono-dimensional structural elements.

Making judgements
The student must be able to evaluate the most suitable solution, in terms of materials and shape.

Communication skills
The student must be able to effectively present and uphold the design solution adopted.

Learning skills
The student must be able to independently use the basic criteria acquired.

Course Prerequisites

Solid and Structural Mechanics

Teaching Methods

Lectures; Practical class; Practical / Workshops

Assessment Methods

The assessment of acquired knowledge will be conducted through practical exercises based on theoretical models and a final oral exam. The exam aims to evaluate whether the student has gained knowledge and understanding of the course topics, as well as interpretative skills and independent judgment in specific cases. The passing threshold is considered reached if the student demonstrates sufficient knowledge and understanding of the topics and shows the ability to apply this knowledge effectively to real-world problems.
The final grade will be awarded according to the following criteria:
• 30 – 30 with honors: Comprehensive, in-depth, and critical knowledge of the topics; excellent command of language; fully original interpretative skills; complete ability to apply knowledge independently to solve the proposed problems.
• 26 – 29: Thorough knowledge of the topics; strong command of language; effective interpretative skills; ability to apply knowledge independently to solve the proposed problems.
• 24 – 25: Good knowledge of the topics; good command of language; correct and confident interpretative skills; ability to correctly apply most of the knowledge to solve the proposed problems.
• 21 – 23: Adequate knowledge of the topics, though lacking thoroughness; satisfactory command of language; correct interpretative skills; limited ability to apply knowledge independently to solve the proposed problems.
• 18 – 20: Basic knowledge of the main topics; basic command of technical language; sufficient interpretative skills; ability to apply acquired basic knowledge.
• Insufficient: The student does not demonstrate acceptable knowledge of the topics covered during the course.

Contents

This course introduces students to the analysis and design of building structures and to the concept of structural safety and prepares students to analyze and design structural elements and systems according to the Italian and European standard. The course starts with the analysis and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures culminating in the consideration of building systems design. The quantitative understanding of interior forces and bending moments, stresses, and deformations are an integral part of the learning process throughout the course. Moreover the capacity design approach, is applied to the design of a plane frame.
