PIER LUIGI NERVI: LA ROTONDA SUL LIDO DI REGGIO CALABRIA

The Lido planned by P.L.Nervi (1962) in Reggio Calabria extends about one kilometer and for the programme (2000 cabins,pedestrian square, indoor swimming pool, dance area, shops, parking, clubs, cinema-theatre,restaurants) can be considered the first project of "waterfront" in Italy. For economic and urban reasons, the bathing complex was in part built in the 60's by La Face and Ziparo, who have taken care of the executive and building, following an agreement decided with Nervi. For this reason the restoration, that the Lido today needs, is refused by those who have no knowledge as the authorship of Nervi and therefore, judge the bathing complex a bulky cement construction situated betweeen the two new museums projected by Z. Hadid along the promenade, while others consider the bathing complex by Nervi, a building that Reggio Calabria - that is without monuments after the earthquake of 1908 - must consider with utmost attention.
