Abstract:
The abstract forms of urbanization of the 20th century have led toward a city far from the human dimension, contributing to the proliferation of social and urban marginalization and exacerbating a low perception of quality of life. In this paper, will be presented the final part of a doctoral research on urban livability, in which the major assumption is that the quality of urban life depends on the quality and the diversity of urban public spaces, conceived as a system of elements in the structure of the city. This assumption underline the physical and social infrastructural dimension of public space, that connects and hosts urban flows of people, goods and services; on the other hand, urban design needs to be more pertinent and flexible to the ever-changing demands and contingencies of urban life. To understand the socio-spatial dynamics that public space has to take into account, the research considers the contemporary approaches on urban livability that has been affected by the concept of city as a place
