Conservation, Reordering, Trasformation.
Modelling of historical urban heritage trough geocoding of mapping and administrative informations of post unitarian cadastre.

This work deals with the modelling of significant parts of the City of Reggio Calabria based upon the analysis of historical cadastres.
The parcel cadastre, essentially intended as a taxation tool and developed after 1870, represents a fundamental operation for the knowledge and the organisation of territories of the newly unified Italian state, realised through urban maps at 1:1000 scale, designed with a standard graphical approach after the performance of rigorous surveying operations. It has been examined together with other documentation dealing with the public expropriation needs connected with the reconstruction after the big earthquake and the appraisal of private estate.
The fundamental data come from the ‘Partitari’, public registers reporting a well detailed description of every single propriety, which have been implemented in a digital database. At the same time it has been proceeded with the digitising of the parcel maps in a GIS environment, with particular concern about the geocoding algorithms. Further on, thanks to the available description of the physical consistence of single houses (number of floors, rooms, etc.) we came to realize a 3D model of the historical town and compare it with the actual one.
Through the representation of the former city that we receive from historical cartography it is possible to recognise the different degree of modification of the urban outline: the choice of three representative areas has been connected with the idea of the overall final destiny of the city of Reggio Calabria: Conservation, Reordering, Trasformation.
The availability of historical data structured into a spatial representation leads to a better exploration of the system, but it also opens toward a new logic, the investigation of territorial phenomena trough a topological approach and categories like density, proximity, distribution, etc.
This approach also allows a thematic analysis of historical heritage, both under quality and quantity aspects, and this is particularly true while elaborating cadastre data where the nature of different parcels arises from the comparison of different soil destination composing a final landscape necessarily richer the simple sum of its components.
Space, then, looses the characteristic of simple abstract container by becoming the ‘storage place’ of different action happening in different times and leads to a modern conception of ‘place’ allowing local communities a tangible chance to come to a new foundation of identity in the capacity of self recognition through new communication tools, telling about their ancient roots as well as their actual reality.
