Abstract:
The civil sector including construction, building management, edifice air conditioning and heating, services, urbanism and settlement is the world’s largest consumer of fossil energy. In this structural strategy, one key factor is the thermal high performance of GREEN buildings made possible by insulating construction materials, better if organic or natural or forest-based, than totally renewal and fully replenishable. In two different scenarios at least: ecological retrofitting; brand new construction; others. As 2020, civil sector consumes around 40% of annual world’s 15,000 Mtoe (Million tons oil equivalent) total energy, equals annual 6,000 Mtoe, an enormous amount deriving mainly from fossil and similar materials. Building bio ecological efficiency help in reducing significantly, up to 50%, of the large civil consumptions of fossil energy, consequently a saving around 20% of total 15,000 Mtoe, i.e. 3,000 Mtoe worldwide, an enormous amount. This is one strategic, perpetual and structural solution of both specific energy crisis as well as more general climate change and consequent global warming. Research shows that the buildings can be bio-ecologically built or retrofitted at a reasonably affordable additional initial investment cost and the cost differential pay-back is fast, acceptable and over a short period of time.
