Fonti e pozzi sacri

Chapter
Publication Date:
2015
abstract:
In Sardinia, the insufficient supply of water was one of the main problems since the Bronze Age, so the cult of water became one of the most important religious elements. Holy wells and sacred sources were as important as sacred spaces - Santa Cristina in Paulilatino and Santa Vittoria in Serri were the most famous places for water cult. Both the two wells originally had a tholos coverage, (a stone false-dome) but turned into a keyhole shape, maintaining paved vestibule and many steps that led down to the well itself. About the source, a small stone building called Su Tempiesu has a triangular tympanum protruding from the volcanic rock wall and covering the source itself. In this paper I suggest a comparative analysis in order to highlight similarities and differences between them, which are carefully described by survey drawings.
