Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with knowledge regarding the behaviour of shallow and deep foundations and retaining structures. Knowledge of the various methods available for the design of foundations with respect to the ultimate and serviceability limit states will be provided.

Teaching Methods

The course is divided into lessons and exercises; the latter are dedicated to the resolution of problems regarding the limit states of foundations and of soil-foundation interaction.


Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral exam after that exercises are completed.

Bearing capacity of shallow foundations

Bearing capacity of shallow foundations using the upper and lower limit methods. Shallow foundations: typologies. Limit load, generalized formulation of Brinch Hansen (1970), corrections to the trinomial formula. Punching.


Soil-foundation interaction

Soil-foundation-superstructure interaction. Winkler model. Beam on Winkler soil.


Foundation piles

Type and executive aspects. Ultimate load of an isolated pile loaded vertically in sand and clay. Prediction of displacements of a single pile subjected to vertical loads: load transfer method and analytical method for the rigid pile and the deformable pile. Ultimate load of an isolated pile loaded horizontally in granular and cohesive soils. Prediction of displacements of a single pile subjected to horizontal loads. Simplified analysis of the displacements of a piling.
