Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at providing the main concepts about soil behaviour and the basic elements for its modelling.


Course Prerequisites

None


Teaching Methods

The course is divided into lessons and computer exercises dedicated to geotechnical modelling.

Contents

Elements of continuum mechanics

Micromecanical approach and force chains. From discrete to continuum. Tensors of stress and deformation. Mohr circles. Invariants of stress and strain. Hooke law, elastic constants. Concepts of elastoplasticity.


The porous medium

Equilibrium equation of a porous medium, two-phase continua and principle of effective stress. Geostatic state of stress. Overconsolidation. Effect of seepage and Darcy law. Continuity equation. Field equation for a porous medium.


Mechanical behaviour of soils

Laboratory equipments. Oedometer, Direct shear and triaxial apparatuses. Stress path. Effect of drainage. Mechanical behaviour of sands and clays. Failure criteria: Mohr-Coulomb, Matsuoka and Nakai, Lade and Duncan and their generalization. Stress-dilatancy relationships. Critical state theory.


Constitutive modelling for soils

Elasticity for transversely isotropic media. Hyperelasticity. Elastolasticity: stiffness and compliance matrices. Cam Clay model. A model for frictional materials.
