Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (22/09/2025 - 05/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

- Qualifying Educational Objectives. The teaching aims to present students with the dynamics of artistic production from the early Renaissance to the Neoclassical age in order to enable them to possess interpretative models (the relationship between commissioner, artist, public and the role and use of the image) in particular, linking artistic artefacts to the culture, society and territorial fabric in which they are determined.

- Specific learning objectives. The course addresses the dynamics of artistic production in the period considered through the analysis of the protagonists and the contexts of action in which the works were commissioned and executed. It provides the methodological skills necessary to approach the understanding and interpretation of figurative documents of the Modern Age. The student will have to know the main historical-artistic sequences, the commissions and the stylistic solutions adopted in relation to the specific cultural, social and political context in which the production of artistic artefacts is set. In particular, the student will have to:

  • place works and artists in a correct chronological order, linking artefacts to the historical context and the society in which they were produced;
  • expound with critical awareness the topics covered in the texts during lectures;
  • demonstrate possession of the critical tools necessary for analysing works;
  • apply the theoretical knowledge acquired to concrete case studies.

Course Prerequisites

Integration with the Modern History course. Basic knowledge of historical and artistic events between the 15th and 18th centuries.

1_DESCRIPTION

The course analyses the historical development and artistic production of the modern age, between the 15th and the end of the 18th century. Within this broad period, the dynamics, evolutionary processes and most significant paradigmatic aspects concerning cultural movements, individual personalities and works will be addressed. The educational objectives consistent with the educational pathway of the LM4 class foresee that the student at the end of the pathway must demonstrate that he/she has learned the fundamentals of modern art history and the biunivocal relationship with the history of architecture, and that he/she has acquired an analytical research method and is able to critically interpret the artistic phenomena of the period under examination. As far as the specific training objectives in relation to teaching are concerned, these must aim to ensure the attainment of an adequate knowledge of the history and theories of architecture, as well as of the arts, technologies and human sciences related to it, and a knowledge of the fine arts as factors that can influence the quality of architectural design.

3_EXPECTED RESULTS

Knowledge and Understanding

Through lectures and autonomous work activities, students will acquire knowledge on the movements, protagonists, and themes of art history between the beginning of the 15th century and the end of the 18th century, in relation to the historical, social, economic, technological, and production contexts, as well as the material and immaterial heritage, connected to human settlements and the territory. In this context, the relationships between architecture, painting and sculpture will be explored.

Applying Knowledge and Understanding

The student will apply the acquired knowledge in the formation of historical-critical skills capable of recognising theories, movements, protagonists and works and understanding their historical-artistic values also in relation to territorial, cultural, social and economic contexts. He/she will also be able to identify and correctly apply the relationships between painting, sculpture in connection with architecture and historical-critical research. The verification of the skills achieved will be implemented by means of conclusive tests.

Making Judgements

Through personal study and research, the student will develop critical skills, be able to formulate his/her own evaluation and/or judgement, autonomously find, select and use data and information, and be able to take initiatives and make decisions.

Communication Skills

The student will acquire the ability to effectively communicate information and ideas, problems and solutions, related to the field of study, to both specialist and non-specialist interlocutors, using appropriate terminology and also using graphical and computer-based support tools for in-depth examination and preparation.

Learning Skills

The student will acquire the ability to continue studying independently even after the teaching has ended, through self-education and self-training.
