Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Ciclo Semestrale (09/02/2026 - 30/04/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students will acquire the basic theoretical and methodological framework and operational tools necessary to understand and evaluate the effects arising from the different levels of project feasibility at different scales of intervention.

The course aims to provide specialist knowledge and skills in design for the enhancement of cultural heritage, with particular attention to the peculiarities of the Mediterranean context, characterized by a profound stratification of tangible and intangible assets. The educational objectives will be achieved through a concrete design experience common to the three modules, which will take place at the “Archeoderi” Museum and Archaeological Park in Bova Marina (RC), in close collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Museums of Calabria of the Ministry of Culture and with the support of several companies in the sector. The case study will be the subject of theoretical and design studies and field activities, aimed at providing master's students with the skills necessary to operate within the complex relationship between exhibit design, conservation requirements, and economic feasibility.

Obiettivi specifici

The Exhibit Design course aims to provide basic theoretical and technical knowledge and tools preparatory to the design and construction of exhibition spaces in their various forms.

The objectives of the course are as follows:

- general knowledge of the evolution of exhibit language and techniques;

- specific knowledge of design and representation techniques;

- in-depth study of the practical possibilities for project implementation

Course Prerequisites

The following knowledge is required to address the course content:

- knowledge of design history

- knowledge of 3D modeling and rendering software

- knowledge of graphics and communication software

- ability to manage spatial design and develop representative drawings (plans, sections, elevations)

Teaching Methods

1. ACTIVITIES:

Lezioni Ore 40

Esercitazioni Ore 10

Altro ORE 10

Seminari specialistici

Totale ORE 60

2.STUDENT INDEPENDENT WORK

The student's independent work will consist of 90 hours (15 hours for each credit) and will involve:

- In-depth study of the bibliography (theoretical part)

- Preparation for mid-term tests, which will take place at the end of each part of the program, with the submission of written and graphic assignments.

- Preparation for exams.

In particular, the student's independent work will be aimed at:

- Deepening the theoretical and methodological topics covered in class on the texts indicated in the module program or on other materials provided by the instructor.

- Integrating the exercises on specific topics with personal contributions.

Assessment Methods

Restrizioni per l’accesso:

Active participation in classes, consistent completion of assignments, and individual study are an integral part of the course and contribute to the final grade. Failure to meet these requirements will result in exclusion from the first exam session.

Tipologia di esame:

The exam will consist of a theoretical section on specific topics and a discussion of the final papers common to the individual modules. The final assignment is individual/group work.

Criteri di valutazione:

The score, expressed in thirtieths, will be assigned based on the level of achievement of the expected results according to the Dublin indicators.

Votazioni

30 - 30 with honors: Excellent ability to conceive and develop a project; excellent knowledge of the topics and excellent ability to formulate original judgments and evaluations; excellent language and communication skills.

26-29: Good command of the topics, full command of language, the student is able to apply knowledge to solve the problems proposed.

22 - 25: Fair knowledge of the topics covered but poor ability to analyze and synthesize; language skills not entirely appropriate; limited ability to independently apply knowledge to solve the problems proposed.

21 – 23: Poor mastery of the main topics of the course with gaps in knowledge and inappropriate language.

18-21: Minimal basic knowledge of the main topics covered in the course, minimal ability to independently apply the knowledge acquired, to formulate judgments and articulate a specialized discourse, as well as minimal presentation and communication skills.

Insufficient: significant gaps in knowledge; inability to articulate concepts in a coherent manner; inappropriate language.

1_DESCRIPTION

The course aims to train designers specializing in exhibition design, with a particular focus on cultural heritage. Through theoretical lessons and design activities, the module aims to explore exhibit design as a “visual machine” (Celant, 1982) designed to show and reveal through spatial configurations. The project is proposed as a place of knowledge and materialization of conditions, as a display between objects and context, capable of imagining a different reading of them.

During the first part of the course, exhibition design projects will be explored in depth, with a particular focus on the history of Italian architecture since the 1950s, examining some of the figures who have had a significant impact on exhibition design (Franco Albini, Carlo Scarpa, Costantino Dardi, etc.).

The second part will focus on a site-specific exhibition design project.
