Date/time interval

Secondo Ciclo Semestrale (09/02/2026 - 30/04/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

In order to achieve the expected results within the framework of the course programme and the proposed experimentation, the teaching offer pursues the following objectives.

General training objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge and skills relating to the understanding, representation and communication of shapes. In particular, it will aim at the acquisition of methods and techniques for drawing and graphic restitution, aimed at multimedia representation and communication.

In summary, the training objectives will be

- acquire basic notions of digital representation;

- acquire the ability to interpret, read and represent shapes and design objects;

- acquire skills in the use of digital techniques of representation and multimedia communication.

Specific training objectives

The course aims at acquiring the necessary skills for representation through new digital technologies. Drawing will be adopted as a tool for understanding shapes and as a means of expressing a design project. Furthermore, the theme of multimedia communication will be addressed, adopting advanced tools for an inclusive use, highlighting risks and opportunities of the new communication and content production tools.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of representation fundamentals and descriptive geometry applications. Knowledge of at least one CAD drawing and modelling software. Knowledge of at least one raster and vector image processing software. Knowledge of the basics of visual communication (form theory, colour theory, graphic design) and basic techniques for photographic shots.

Teaching Methods

1_ COURSE STRUCTURE AND TEACHING

Teaching will be structured in theoretical lectures, study seminars and laboratory exercises, according to a teaching schedule divided into three sections.

The first section, approximately the first four weeks, will be devoted to the theoretical and practical foundations of visual communication and two- and three-dimensional representation.

The second section, the middle three weeks of the semester, will deal with the theories and techniques of mass media and multimedia communication. In addition, examples of projects for the use of cultural heritage through new digital technologies will be illustrated.

The third phase, the last four weeks, will focus on the design and realisation of a multimedia communication project.

The course includes the periodic delivery of exercises related to the theoretical content covered. It is also planned to carry out a final training exercise on an individually assigned topic.

- Lectures (hours/year in the classroom): 15

- Exercises (hours/year in the classroom): 20

- Practical activities (hours/year in the classroom): 35

- Seminars (hours/year in the classroom): 10

2_ AUTONOMOUS LEARNING OF THE STUDENT

The student is required to do individual work for a total of 120 hours:

- In-depth study/study on bibliography (theoretical part): 30 hours

- Test preparation (experimentation): 45 hours

- Examination preparation: 45 hours

Assessment Methods

Regular exercises assigned by the lecturer are planned during the course. In addition, a final exercise on the year's theme is planned for the verification of acquired competences and skills.

In order to ascertain the correctness of the method and the appropriateness of the results, meetings will be held to verify the thematic exercises.

The examination is accessed after verifying that at least 70% of the assignments required during the year have been completed correctly and on time and after completing the final exercise on the year's theme. The exam provides both a verification of the theoretical training course relating to the topics covered during the course and an assessment of the exercises carried out by the students according to the thematic lines indicated by the lecturer.

Grades:

30 - 30 cum laude: excellent ability to conceive and develop a communication and representation project in the field of design; excellent language and communicative property also on different registers (drawing, presentation, etc.);

26- 29: good ability to devise and develop a communication and representation project in the field of design; good ability to articulate a specialist discourse also through different communicative registers;

22 - 25: Sufficient ability to devise and develop a communication and representation project in the field of design, as well as to articulate a specialist discourse;

18-21: Minimal ability to devise and develop a communication and representation project in the field of design.

Insufficient: Major difficulties in devising and developing a communication and representation project; major gaps in training; inability to apply acquired knowledge; inappropriate language.

Mode of conducting the examination: theory and practice.

1_DESCRIPTION

The course is aimed at acquiring skills in the field of digital representation, both in the three-dimensional and two-dimensional field. The notions for a critical and interpretative approach of representation and communication techniques for design will be provided, with particular attention to the new digital fruition methodologies in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).

In the course of the lectures, the fundamentals of graphic and multimedia communication will be provided with reference to some examples of application in the field of art, industrial design and graphics. These experiences will be used to support the development of an applicative exercise.

The student, at the end of the course, will be able to elaborate representation and communication strategies appropriate to the different areas in the field of Design, in an autonomous and creative way, laying the foundations for a pathway of implementation of his/her skills.

Main training objectives

- acquire skills in 2D and 3D digital drawing

- acquire skills in drawing shapes and objects, checking their dimensioning, verifying their organisation and arrangement in space;

- acquire skills in graphic and multimedia communication;

- acquire skills in building a communication strategy with advanced tools.

2_COURSE PROGRAMME

The course will offer the essential notions of digital representation to understand and communicate shapes and objects. The necessary skills for the elaboration of a graphic and multimedia communication project will also be offered.

Application exercises aimed at the elaboration of the year's theme will be proposed as part of the teaching activities.

Briefly, the topics covered will be

- 2D and 3D digital representation techniques.

- Digital representation for knowledge and communication.

- The use of images for the representation of forms and space.

- The design of multimedia communication.

- Tools for inclusive enjoyment: Story telling, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), etc.

3_EXPECTED RESULTS

Understanding shapes through digital representation tools. Expanding the potential for creative imagination through the tools of 3D representation. Elaboration of communication and utilisation projects. Controlling and managing multimedia communication processes.

The student will apply the methodologies learnt during the theoretical lectures to a case study agreed with the lecturer.

Knowledge and ability to understand

At the end of the course the student will have acquired the ability to understand and analyse shapes and design objects, interpreting the underlying compositional laws. Furthermore, he/she will have acquired the ability to understand the messages conveyed through communication processes.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

The knowledge and skills acquired will enable students to develop a critical approach to representation and communication techniques. Students will be able to propose autonomous and original solutions, aware of the risks and opportunities inherent in the new multimedia communication systems.

Communicative skills

The student will acquire the ability to communicate with appropriate terminology and through graphic works, both in specialised scientific fields relating to design and communication, and in broader popular contexts. Furthermore, he/she will acquire the ability to manage communication processes through innovative tools.

Learning ability

At the end of the course the student will be able to independently deepen the techniques of representation and communication, having acquired the necessary basis for further in-depth studies in the field of multimedia communication technologies.
