Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (22/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge required to understand, analyze, and apply the main security mechanisms in wireless access networks and telecommunication networks.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand the fundamental principles of security in wireless access networks and communication systems;
  • identify vulnerabilities and threats in network architectures;
  • apply methodologies and tools for data and communication protection;
  • evaluate the effectiveness of adopted countermeasures through case studies and practical exercises.

Course Prerequisites

Basic understanding of telecommunications and MATLAB.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical lessons, hands-on exercises, and code implementation.

Assessment Methods

Assessment Methods: Oral examination.

The examination consists of an oral discussion of the developed project. The discussion is aimed at assessing the student’s ability to understand, analyze, and critically discuss the implemented design choices.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • 30 with honors: The student demonstrates a complete, in-depth, and critical understanding of the implemented design choices. The student shows excellent command of technical terminology and is able to justify design decisions and autonomously apply the acquired knowledge to the solution of complex problems.
  • 28 – 30: The student demonstrates a complete and in-depth understanding of the project and the related theoretical concepts, with excellent command of technical terminology. The student is able to correctly interpret security issues and autonomously justify the adopted solutions.
  • 24 – 27: The student demonstrates a good understanding of the project and of the main security concepts, with appropriate use of technical terminology. The student is able to correctly apply the acquired knowledge to standard security scenarios.
  • 20 – 23: The student demonstrates sufficient understanding of the project and of basic security concepts, with limited ability to further elaborate. The student is able to discuss and apply basic knowledge in simple and well-defined contexts.
  • 18 – 19: The student demonstrates basic understanding of the project and of the main course contents, with elementary use of technical terminology. The student is able to discuss the project in a guided manner.
  • < 18 – Insufficiente: The student does not demonstrate adequate understanding of the project nor achievement of the expected learning outcomes.

Course program

The course addresses the main aspects related to security in wireless access networks and telecommunications networks (1 CFU), with particular attention to concepts, methodologies, and tools for the protection of data and communications (0.5 CFU). Theoretical and practical elements concerning vulnerabilities, threats, and countermeasures will be presented (0.5 CFU), together with application-oriented activities aimed at strengthening the understanding of network security mechanisms (1 CFU).

Expected results

Assessment Methods: Oral examination.

The examination consists of an oral discussion of the developed project. The discussion is aimed at assessing the student’s ability to understand, analyze, and critically discuss the implemented design choices.

Dublin Descriptors:

  • Knowledge and understanding: The student acquires knowledge of the principles of security in wireless access networks and telecommunications networks, understanding vulnerabilities, threats, and countermeasures, also through the modeling and analysis of network scenarios using MATLAB.
  • Applying knowledge and understanding: The student is able to apply theoretical knowledge to design and develop, within the MATLAB environment, models and simulations aimed at analyzing vulnerabilities, implementing security mechanisms, and evaluating the effectiveness of the adopted countermeasures.
  • Making judgements: The student is able to critically interpret the results of simulations and project activities carried out in MATLAB.
  • Communication skills: The student is able to clearly present, using appropriate technical terminology, the design choices adopted in the MATLAB-based project, illustrating methodology, results, and implications.
  • Learning skills: The student develops the ability to autonomously deepen their knowledge of advanced MATLAB tools and functionalities applicable to different scenarios.
