Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (22/09/2025 - 12/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the engineering student with an overview of chemical processes aimed at the production of intermediates and chemical products with sustainable technologies and through the use of renewable raw materials or by-products of other processes.

Course Prerequisites

No

Teaching Methods

Lectures + laboratory activities.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral exam and a report on laboratory work.

The oral exam assesses the student's knowledge of the topics covered during the course. The oral exam aims to highlight the student's developed critical and methodological skills and their personal approach to the topics covered. Particularly positive evaluation will be given to students' autonomy and mastery of expression, as well as their ability to justify and argue their choices. The outcome of this part accounts for 50% of the final grade.

The laboratory report, which each student (or workgroup) is typically required to submit at least one week before the oral exam, is evaluated based on the accuracy of the description of the experimental methodology used and the accuracy of the preparation and discussion of the final results. The outcome of the laboratory report accounts for 50% of the final grade.

The final grade will be assigned according to the following evaluation criteria:

30 - 30 cum laude: complete, in-depth, and critical knowledge of the topics, excellent command of language, complete and original interpretative skills, full ability to independently apply the knowledge of the topics covered during the course;

26 - 29: complete and in-depth knowledge of the topics, full command of language, complete and effective interpretative skills, able to independently apply the knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

24 - 25: knowledge of the topics with a good level of understanding, good command of language, correct and confident interpretative skills, ability to correctly apply most of the knowledge of the topics covered during the course;

21 - 23: adequate knowledge of the topics, but lack of mastery, satisfactory command of language, correct interpretative skills, limited ability to independently apply the knowledge of the topics covered during the course;

18 - 20: basic knowledge of the main topics, basic knowledge of scientific language, sufficient interpretative skills, ability to apply the basic knowledge acquired;

Insufficient: Significant deficiencies in knowledge and understanding of the topics covered during the course.

Texts

Teacher's notes

Contents

Management of catalyst-driven chemical processes and the effect of key operating parameters on process performance indicators (temperature, pressure, time).

Chemico-physical characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass and its catalytic transformation into high-value-added products.

The laboratory work will focus on the transformation of lignocellulosic agri-food waste into high-value-added chemical products.
