Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (22/09/2025 - 12/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

The course aims to provide the basic geotechnical skills necessary to support the design of controlled landfills and containment or remediation systems of contaminated sites. In this context, the course aims to provide the student with knowledge relating to environmental regulation, with reference to controlled landfills and remediation of contaminated sites, to the essential elements of a landfill; to the in situ and laboratory characterization of the materials used in landfills and to the methods of characterization, remediation and containment of contaminated sites.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

At the end of the course, students will be able to make design choices in accordance with current environmental regulation, to select the most suitable materials for the construction of controlled landfills, to plan and interpret laboratory tests and in situ investigations useful for landfill design, to prepare an investigation plan for the characterization of a contaminated site, to select the most suitable remediation technology or safety measure based on the characteristics of site and contamination.

Students will be able to use the knowledge acquired in order to solve geotechnical problems of medium difficulty to cope with problems of environmental protection and defense of the territory. The skills acquired can be used both in professional and in research contexts.

The aforementioned skills will be acquired through lectures, exercises also in the laboratory and through the individual critical study of the topics covered during the course.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS

The student will be able to update and integrate their knowledge, even at an international level, on environmental issues.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

The student will be able to schematize the main design elements of the controlled landfills, the safety measures and remediation technologies of contaminated sites, to communicate in oral form the topics addressed during the course, to interpret technical reports and regulatory texts.

LEARNING SKILLS

The student will be able to independently deepen the topics under study.

Course Prerequisites

Geotechnics

Teaching Methods

Lectures, exercises also in the laboratory and individual critical study of the topics covered during the course.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test aimed to assess the knowledge acquired by the student on the topics covered by the course, independent judgment, learning ability and communication skills. The outcome of the exam will result from an average of the marks assigned on each question posed to the student. Grading criteria will be the following:

30 cum laude: complete, in-depth and critical knowledge of the topics, excellent language skills, complete and original interpretative ability, full ability to independently apply the knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

28-30: complete and in-depth knowledge of the topics, excellent language properties, complete and effective interpretative skills, able to independently apply the knowledge to solve the proposed problems.

24-27: knowledge of the topics with a good degree of command, good language skills, correct and safe interpretative skills, good ability to correctly apply most of the knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

20 - 23: adequate knowledge of the topics but limited mastery of them, satisfactory language skills, correct interpretative ability, more than sufficient ability to independently apply the knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

18 - 19: basic knowledge of the main topics, basic knowledge of technical language, sufficient interpretative ability, sufficient ability to apply the basic knowledge acquired;

Insufficient: does not have an acceptable knowledge of the topics covered during the course.
