Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Ciclo Semestrale (23/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides the tools to understand the laws governing river hydraulics and the factors that generate hydraulic risk and provides the tools for sizing the hydraulic arrangement interventions and the characteristic elements of an aqueduct and sewer. Therefore, the course develops the ability to integrate knowledge and manage the complexity of the problems related to hydraulic constructions, aqueducts and sewers and develops the communication skills necessary to communicate, in a clear way, the knowledge in the sector of hydraulic constructions, aqueducts and sewers.

Furthermore, it hones the learning skills necessary to deepen the subject independently and in research contexts. The first part of the course describes the methods to estimate the maximum discharge, the equations governing the motion of water in a riverbed and the laws governing solid river transport. The second part describes the main hydraulic works (dams, levees and Embankments, river crossing structures, transversal repellents) and non-structural interventions.

The last part describes the characteristic elements of an aqueduct (intake works, adduction and distribution, tanks and pipelines, fire prevention network, losses), the materials used and the installation criteria and the characteristic elements of a sewer network (pipes, siphons, flooding drains, gutters, drains and washing wells), the materials used and the first rainwater control systems.

Course Prerequisites

Basics of Hydraulics and Hydrology

Teaching Methods

Lectures (hours/year in lecture theatre): 54

Practical class (hours/year in lecture theatre): 18

Assessment Methods

Oral examination

Project Evaluation

The examination comprises an oral test. This test consists of an interview in which the exercises on the practical topics of the course will also be evaluated and discussed.

The oral test is intended to verify the level of knowledge and understanding of the course content and to assess the student's autonomy of judgement, learning ability and communication skills.

The outcome of the examination will depend on a weighted average of the results of the oral tests and the evaluation of the exercises. The final grade will be awarded according to the following evaluation criteria:

30 cum laude: complete, in-depth and critical knowledge of the topics, excellent language skills, complete and original interpretative ability, full ability to apply knowledge independently to solve the proposed problems;

28 - 30: complete and thorough knowledge of the topics, excellent language skills, complete and effective interpretative ability, able to autonomously apply knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

24 - 27: knowledge of the topics with a good degree of mastery, good language property, correct and safe interpretative ability, good ability to correctly apply most of knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

20 - 23: adequate knowledge of the topics but limited mastery of them, satisfactory language skills, correct interpretative ability, more than sufficient ability to apply knowledge independently to solve the proposed problems

18 - 19: basic knowledge of the main topics, basic knowledge of technical language, sufficient interpretative ability, sufficient ability to apply the basic knowledge acquired;

Insufficient: does not have an acceptable knowledge of the topics covered during the course.
