Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (22/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Acquisition of knowledge on the physical mechanisms and mathematical techniques underlying the analysis of electromagnetic devices radiating in both free space and complex environments.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the most important theorems of applied electromagnetism, crucial mathematical techniques for the rigorous analysis of notable electromagnetic devices and the functioning of high-performance transmission systems including antenna arrays and reflectors.

Teaching Methods

In-person classes, exercises and seminars.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test, aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding of the course contents, assessing autonomy of judgment, communication skills and learning skills. The oral test consists in two questions on all the course contents. A mark from 18 to 30 is assigned to each question. The final mark is the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the questions.

In order to pass the exam with a mark between 18/30 and 19/30, the knowledge / skills of the subject must be at least at an elementary level. A mark between 20/30 and 24/30 is attributed when the student is able to correctly answer to the applicative questions but has elementary knowledge / skills as far as the theoretical part. A mark between 25/30 and 30/30 is attributed when the student demonstrates good knowledge / skills both in applicative and theoretical topics. Honors can be attributed to students who have acquired excellent knowledge/skills.

Knowledge and understanding: Upon passing the exam, the student will have acquired the conceptual tools and mathematical techniques for the analysis and design of radiating antennas, both in free space and in complex environments. Specifically, the student understands the fundamental propagation mechanisms in the presence of obstacles (dielectric, metallic, small, and large scale), propagation in anisotropic media (e.g., the ionosphere), synthesis techniques for shaped and narrow beams using antenna arrays, as well as the operation of more sophisticated antennas, such as patch antennas.

Applying knowledge and understanding: Upon passing the exam, the student will be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge and understanding to the analysis and design of radiating systems in complex environments.

Making judgements: After passing the exam, the student will be able to recognize situations where the acquired skills should be applied, identify the type of problem, and independently evaluate possible alternatives for its resolution. The student will also be able to critically examine the results obtained.

Learning skills: After passing the exam, the student will be able to independently deepen their knowledge and apply it to the study of new topics encountered in their further studies and professional career.
