Syllabus

Course Objectives

  • Know the main classes of materials for civil engineering and their properties.
  • Understand the relationships between structure, composition, and mechanical, physical, and environmental performance.
  • Select suitable materials for civil engineering projects (buildings, road infrastructure, bridges, sewer systems) with an integrated technical-environmental approach.



Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledges on chemistry and physic


Teaching Methods

Lectures,tutorials, laboratory tests.


Assessment Methods

Written and oral test. Written test includes exercises and question about theorical findings.

The examination procedures will also be adapted to the particular needs of students with disabilities certified pursuant to current laws and/or with specific learning disorder (SLD) certified pursuant to current law..

Evaluation methods

The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths. In formulating the final judgment, the following criterion will be followed:

Insufficient: insufficient knowledge of the topics covered during the course;

18-20: elementary knowledge of the topics covered during the course with gaps;

21-23: complete knowledge of the topics covered during the course even if not particularly deepened;

24-26: good knowledge of the topics covered during the course, adequate technical language;

27-29: excellent knowledge of the topics covered during the course, adequate technical language and a punctual and precise way of expression;

30-30 cum laude: excellent knowledge of the topics covered during the course with critical analysis skills and assessments, adequate technical language and a punctual and precise way of expression.

  • Fundamentals of Materials Science and Technology. Classification of materials, crystalline structure, defects in solids, structure-property relationships.
  • Material properties. Physical properties: density, conductivity, thermal expansion. Mechanical properties: stress/strain, elastic modulus, strength, fatigue, hardness. Thermal and acoustic insulation properties.
  • Steels and metal alloys: structural steels, reinforcing steels, corrosion protection.
  • Ceramic materials: structure and properties. Bricks, compact ceramics, tiles, refractories. Aerial and hydraulic binders.
  • Concrete, cement, and mortars: composition, workability, strength, sustainability.
  • Glass: structure and properties.
  • Polymeric and composite materials. Mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. Adhesives, sealants, and foams.
  • Natural and recycled aggregates, sustainable bitumen and asphalt.
  • Innovative and sustainable building materials.
