Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Ciclo Semestrale (23/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to study the primary components of transport systems. It aims to provide students with basic knowledge of road and railway transport. In particular, the functional characteristics of the transport systems (networks and nodes for the mobility of people and goods), the techniques for representing the networks, the tools for analyzing and forecasting the transport demand, notes on the demand /supply interaction will be discussed. Finally, guidelines relating to the planning process of transport systems will be provided, including the assessment phase of the impacts determined by the plan measures.

Ability to apply knowledge: after passing the exam, the student is able to analyze the supply and demand components of a transport system, he is able to face problems of locomotion mechanics.

Autonomy of judgment: to pass the exam the student must autonomously answer theoretical, analytical and design questions with free answer and is therefore led to develop autonomy of judgment on completeness, the depth and correctness of freely given responses.

Communication skills: the student is able to illustrate the theoretical and technical motivations that are the basis of the properties of elementary transport systems.

Learning ability: after passing the exam, the student is able to learn independently other basic characteristics of planning and management of transport systems

Course Prerequisites

No requirement

Teaching Methods

The lessons will be in presence, will be held in the classroom assigned, and will include guide to applications and discussions on the subject.

Technical visits and seminars could be planned.

The written test consists of an application, with a maximum duration of 2 hours, aimed at solving exercises in line with the exercises carried out in the classroom during the course.

The oral exam consists of some questions on the topics developed during the course.

Assessment Methods

Assessment and evaluation consist:

- in a written test, to verify the ability to analyze and solve problems of mechanical locomotion, maximum vote 30/30,

- in an oral examination, aimed at ascertaining the understanding of theoretical methods for the analysis of elementary transport systems and their supply and demand components, a maximum vote of 30/30.

The final vote is the arithmetic average of the votes obtained in the two tests.

In order to pass the exam with a minimum score of 18/30 it is necessary that the knowledge/ skills of the subject are at least at an elementary level, both for the written and oral part. It is awarded a vote between 25/30 and 30/30 when the student is able to properly perform the written part and demonstrates good skills in the theoretical part. Students who have acquired excellent skills both in the written and in the theoretical part can be awarded the praise.
