Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (22/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Acquisition of knowledge on the physical mechanisms and mathematical techniques underlying the use of the electromagnetic fields for biomedical therapy and diagnosis.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of fundamental theorem of electromagnetic and mathematical techniques for the analysis of electromagnetic devices (f.i. antennas).

Basic principles of modern physic and chemistry.

Teaching Methods

In-person classes and exercises.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test, aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding of the course contents, assessing autonomy of judgment, communication skills and learning skills. The oral test consists in two questions on all the course contents. A mark from 18 to 30 is assigned to each question. The final mark is the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the questions.

In order to pass the exam with a mark between 18/30 and 19/30, the knowledge / skills of the subject must be at least at an elementary level. A mark between 20/30 and 24/30 is attributed when the student is able to correctly answer to the applicative questions but has elementary knowledge / skills as far as the theoretical part. A mark between 25/30 and 30/30 is attributed when the student demonstrates good knowledge / skills both in applicative and theoretical topics. Honors can be attributed to students who have acquired excellent knowledge / skills.

Texts

A. Webb, Introduction to Biomedical Imaging, IEEE Press Series in Biomedical Engineering.

D. Ffytche, C. Guy, Introduction to the principles of medical imaging, Imperial College Press.

Chen, Xudong. Computational methods for electromagnetic inverse scattering. John Wiley & Sons, 2018.

Contents

Fundamental mechanisms of interactions between electromagnetic fields and biosystems. (0.5 CFU)

Electromagnetic fields for diagnostic purposes. X-rays imaging. Computed Tomography and Instrumentation. Magnetic Resonance imaging and instrumentation. (1.5 CFU)

Microwave tomography and possible application to breast cancer diagnosis and brain stroke monitoring. (2 CFU)

Electromagnetic fields for therapeutic purposes: Hyperthermia. Electroporation. Ablation. Hints on new experimental therapeutic treatments. (1.5 CFU)

Guidelines for limiting exposure to electromagnetic fields. Hints on dosimetry. (0.5 CFU)

Knowledge and understanding: Upon passing the exam, the student knows and understands the fundamental mechanisms of interaction between electromagnetic fields and biological systems, the main applications of electromagnetic fields in the biomedical field (e.g., Magnetic Resonance Imaging, X-rays, hyperthermia, ablation), and the exposure limit guidelines for electromagnetic fields.

Applying knowledge and understanding: Upon passing the exam, the student will be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge and understanding to the use, design, and characterization of biomedical devices employing electromagnetic fields.

Making judgements: After passing the exam, the student will be able to recognize situations where the acquired skills should be applied, identify the type of problem, and independently evaluate possible alternatives for its resolution.

Learning skills: After passing the exam, the student will be able to independently deepen their knowledge and apply it to the study of new topics encountered in their further studies and professional career.
