Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course's educational objective is to provide students with the tools that will enable them to acquire a critical understanding of the evolution of historical architecture in ancient and medieval times, through the reading and interpretation of the theoretical, technological and operational processes that underlie them. This capacity is aimed at the formation of an indispensable cultural background for professionals who must be able to understand and interpret the processes underlying the design of architecture, which are indispensable in the approach to conservation.

Course Prerequisites

In In order to approach the teaching of the History of Ancient and Medieval Architecture, it is important that the student possesses basic notions of the political and social history of the European context for the period covered.

It is necessary for the student to possess basic geographical knowledge of the European territory.

It is also desirable for the student to have knowledge of basic forms of architectural representation.

If the student does not pass the History of Ancient and Medieval Architecture examination, he/she will not be able to take the History of Modern Architecture and the Architectural Restoration Laboratory examinations.

Teaching Methods

1_ COURSE STRUCTURE AND TEACHING

Lectures: (60 hours/year in the classroom):

Schedule of training activities: first semester, from 22 September 2025 to 05 December 2025

2_ AUTONOMOUS LEARNING OF THE STUDENT

In the 90 hours (6X15) that the student must devote to individual study, it is advisable to study in depth the recommended texts on the topics covered in the course of the lectures, correlating the reading with the study of the images and graphic reproductions of the architectures covered, indispensable for an effective preparation that will allow a satisfactory passing of the examination.

Assessment Methods

In the course of the interview, the student, in order to pass the examination, must demonstrate that he/she has acquired at least a basic knowledge of the evolution of architecture in the periods covered, expressing him/herself using adequate terminology, also making use of simple freehand representations when required.

Excellent: demonstration of having acquired, in addition to overall knowledge, the ability to interpret and connect phenomena in the evolutionary process addressed by the course of study, combined with any skills acquired through autonomous and conscious critical analysis.

Fair: partially mnemonic knowledge, synthesis and analysis skills not perfectly consolidated and language correct but not entirely appropriate.

Sufficient: sufficient knowledge of the topics, with some formative gaps and/or language that is not always appropriate.

Insufficient: serious formative gaps, inability to place the arguments in the historical-cultural context of reference, inappropriate language.

Attendance is not compulsory (Art.14 Teaching Regulations of the One-Cycle Degree Course in Architecture, Class LM-4 c.u.) but strongly recommended.

Examination procedure: oral

Contents

The course aims to provide the tools for understanding how architectural phenomena have manifested themselves over time. From Greek civilisation to the threshold of the Renaissance, the formal and technical-constructive aspects of a representative selection of architectures will be analysed. They will be investigated in relation to the socio-political-cultural and territorial context of reference, in order to identify the motivations that contributed to their conception and realisation. This will provide the necessary tools for an adequate knowledge of the history and theories of architecture, enabling the student to learn the fundamentals.
