Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:


  • Use freehand drawing as a tool to conceive, observe, and understand the design project.
  • Read, understand, and accurately represent sections and axonometric cutaways.
  • Develop a critical and informed approach to the use of digital tools in architectural drawing.
  • Understand the value of slow time and sensory perception in the design and representation process.
  • Integrate different modes of representation to effectively control architectural space.



Course Prerequisites

Students are expected to have:


  • Basic knowledge of technical drawing and architectural representation, including orthographic projections, axonometric views, and perspectives.
  • Introductory familiarity with CAD or digital modeling software (not mandatory, but recommended).
  • A curious mindset and a willingness to engage with both manual and digital drawing practices in an integrated manner.


Teaching Methods

The course combines lectures, hands-on classroom exercises, and group reviews of the students’ work.

Students will be guided in the development of graphic outputs through a balanced use of freehand drawing, digital tools, and drawing from life.

Both individual and group activities are planned to foster critical observation, technical experimentation, and the integration of analog and digital drawing practices.


Assessment Methods

The assessment of learning will be based on:


  • Continuous evaluation of the graphic works produced during the semester.
  • Active participation in classroom exercises and collective reviews.
  • Presentation of final works, consisting of:
  • Freehand drawings (sketches, diagrams, drawings from life).
  • A digital model of a project provided by the teaching staff, developed with SketchUp (recommended but not mandatory).
  • A collage board for the project presentation.
  • A short critical report on the design and representational process carried out.
  • Final oral discussion on the submitted works and on the main contents of the course.

Contents

The course explores drawing as a critical and cognitive tool for architectural design, comparing traditional practices with digital tools.

Special attention will be given to the representation and understanding of the section and the axonometric cutaway, conceived as fundamental tools to "enter" space and grasp its volumetric and functional organization.

The main topics can be summarized as follows:


  • Freehand drawing as a tool for design thinking.
  • Gesture, material, slowness: the sensory and cognitive dimensions of drawing.
  • Drawing from life: observing, selecting, representing.
  • The section as a device for reading and designing space.
  • The axonometric cutaway as a tool for synthesis and communication.
  • The critical integration of digital tools: graphic tablet and SketchUp.
