Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Ciclo Semestrale (23/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is to aquire the basic knowledge regarding design and management of Sanitary Environmental Engineerig plants with specific reference to municipal wastewater treatment.

More specifically, starting from the definition of pollution and on the regulations on wastewater treatment in Italy the main physical, chemical and biologic unit treatments in Italy are analysed.

One important part of the course is a numerical excercise related to the design of a municipal wastewater treatment plant.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of chemistry and hydraulics.

Teaching Methods

Conventional lessons.

Numerical exercises.

Guided visits.

The entire course is recorded on MS TEAMS platform.

Assessment Methods

The exam grading will be carried out on the basis of a written test on the sizing of the main sections of an activated sludge treatment plant or, at the student's choice, on the discussion of a design exercise (to be approved by the teacher) on the same topics (to be completed individually or in groups). There is always an oral exam during which the knowledge of the theoretical and design aspects of the discipline will be evaluated, as well as the ability to expose and use technical language. The chosen examination method is the one considered most suitable to verify the achievement of the expected results. The exam will determine the assignment of the final grade (from 0 to 30 points with possible attribution of honors, by adding the marks for each question). The oral exam will focus on possible areas / types of questions related to:

1. Plant layout, characteristics of sewage sludge (from 0 to 10 points);

2. Sizing of water line and sludge line treatments (at least 2 questions, from 0 to 20 points). The final grade will be assigned according to the following evaluation criterion:

30 - 30 with honors (lode): complete, thorough and critical knowledge of the topics, excellent language properties, complete and original interpretative skills, full ability to independently apply knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

26 - 29: complete and in-depth knowledge of the topics, approriate use of language, complete and effective interpretative skills, able to independently apply knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

24 - 25: knowledge of topics with a good degree of learning, good language properties, correct and sound interpretative skills, ability to correctly apply most of the knowledge to solve the proposed problems;

21 - 23: adequate knowledge of the topics, but lack of mastery of the details, satisfactory language properties, correct interpretative ability, limited ability to apply knowledge autonomously to solve the proposed problems;

18 - 20: basic knowledge of the main topics, basic knowledge of technical language, sufficient interpretative skills, ability to apply the basic knowledge acquired;

Insufficient: does not have an acceptable knowledge of the topics covered during the course.
