Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (22/09/2025 - 05/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

In order to achieve the expected results, the course provides the student a method for approaching the artefact to be preserved which interprets, through careful historical research and an accurate survey of the geometries, the construction events, which analyzes and explains the phenomena of degradation and instability also in relation to their historical evolution, which culturally justifies the consolidation techniques in compliance with current legislation.

In addition, students will carry out an in-depth design study regarding consolidation within the case study agreed with the teaching staff within the Laboratory of Architectural Conservation.

Course Prerequisites

Students must have the basic notions of structures, history of architecture, architectural drawing and architectural technology.

Teaching Methods

1_ COURSE STRUCTURE AND TEACHING

Lessons (hours / year in the classroom): 35 h

Exercises (hours / year in the classroom): 4 h

Practical activities, site surveys (hours / year in the classroom): 15 h

Seminars: 6 h

2_ AUTONOMOUS LEARNING OF THE STUDENT

Study on bibliography (theoretical part): 35 h

Design on case study: 35 h

Exam preparation: 20 h

Assessment Methods

The exam can be accessed after the conclusion of the workshop held during the semester on a study topic agreed with the teacher and according to specific deadlines. The exercise will be carried out by working groups made up of at least 3 students. The votes within the group could be diversified based on the quality of the work carried out by each of the members. The final assessment consists of the delivery and evaluation of the entire final work, complete and correct, and an oral test. The oral test will consist of theoretical questions, discussion of the topics of the lessons, on the bibliography of the course and on the learning of the topics, as well as questions aimed at highlighting the student's ability to develop connections between the various topics of the course and with previous teachings.

1_DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory of Architectural Conservation contributes to completing the knowledge characterizing the architect's profession, consistently with the training path of the LM-4 degree class, focusing on the project of conservation of the existing in its multiscale dimension and as an intellectual and scientific product of the training of the architect.

In particular, the course of Restoration and Reinforcement of Historical Buildings provides analysis

methodologies and tools to plan the reinforcement interventions, with reference to the material and

structural components and with specific attention to the design methods in the seismic area.

2_PROGRAM

The course aims to provide students with the criteria for a correct interpretation of the static behavior of buildings, the main causes of collapse and degradation of the structures as well as the design methodologies for consolidation interventions. The definition and planning of the consolidation interventions is therefore understood within a cognitive and operational path that starts from an in-depth study of the factory (analysis of materials and building components), to recognize the phenomena of instability and degradation, identify the causes and evaluate the effectiveness of the consolidation interventions, also in relation to their compatibility (formal, mechanical and chemical-physical) with the existing one. The topics will concern:

- Notes on construction techniques and traditional repair techniques

- Regulations (with particular reference to constructions in seismic areas)

- Analysis and interpretation of structural failure: lesions, deformations, failures

a) foundations

b) masonries

c) horizontal structures (vaults, floors, roofs)

-Intervention techniques

a) foundations

b) masonries

c) horizontal structures

- Temporary works

3_EXPECTED RESULTS

According to the Dublin Descriptors, passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:

Knowledge and understanding

Ability to analyze the construction and material characteristics of historic buildings, to recognize the

construction techniques, the structural elements and their respective functions, the materials and their physical and mechanical characteristics, and any state of structural degradation.

Applying knowledge and understanding

Ability to develop projects for the conservation, restoration, recovery and reuse of architectural

artefacts, and ability to manage transformations over time.

Making judgments, communication skills and learning skills

Ability to operate and communicate design choices independently.
