Date/time interval

Secondo Ciclo Semestrale (09/02/2026 - 30/04/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

In order to achieve the expected results for the course program and the proposed experiment, the teaching program, divided into different activities, pursues the following objectives:

- Qualifying educational objectives: Theoretical and practical ability and autonomy to manage the project in its various figurative, functional, and landscape aspects;

- Specific educational objectives: ability to interpret the design of an institutional building in its integrated architectural, functional, environmental, and symbolic relationships.

Course Prerequisites

As a regulatory prerequisite, students must have passed the Architectural Design Laboratory 1 exam.

In terms of skills, students must be able to synthesize the various areas of knowledge and disciplines covered in previous years: figurative and cultural background in the field of architecture and art history, ability to interpret cities and contexts, relationship between structure/technology/architecture, use of drawing forms (manual and digital) as forms of invention and representation of the project.

Teaching Methods

1.    TIPOLOGIA DELLE ATTIVITÀ FORMATIVE:

Lezioni: (ore/anno in aula): 30

Esercitazioni: (ore/anno in aula):20

Attività pratiche: (ore/anno in aula):10

Come da calendario didattico il corso sarà svolto nel secondo semestre

-       Preparazione esami

1 cfu=25 ore (10 ore frontale/15 a cura dello studente*)

-       Approfondimento/studio su bibliografia (parte teorica) 30

-       Preparazione verifiche (sperimentazione) 30

-       Preparazione esami finali 30

Assessment Methods

Modalità di svolgimento dell’esame: Teoria/Pratica

The exam can be taken individually or in groups and can be taken after verification and certification of classroom attendance of no less than 70% of the hours established by the lesson calendar. The exam consists of the presentation and discussion of the project boards, an interview on the theoretical topics covered in the recommended bibliography, and the evaluation of the intermediate and accumulated work during the classroom exercises and workshops.

1_DESCRIZIONE (massimo 1.500 battute)

The educational objectives relate to the need for design synthesis to be achieved during the fourth year of the degree course. In other words, the aim is to pursue an awareness of design as a theoretical and practical complexity, a moment of synthesis between functional, tectonic, and formal relationships within a specific context. The role of architecture in improving and enhancing places and living in a broad sense is linked to the ability of the project to intervene, especially in hybrid contexts, where modification is confronted with multiple urban, landscape, and environmental aspects. In this sense, synthesis refers to the ability to combine different areas of knowledge and, therefore, the different interdisciplinary aspects of architectural design in its need to become form and construction.

In particular, the course will be structured around four aspects closely related to the course theme:

- Context: How to reconsider urban and/or hybrid contexts in relation to social, economic, energy, and environmental sustainability changes;

- Landscape: as an anthropic construction, a space of continuity between nature and history, a palimpsest whose meanings travel alongside the goals and achievements of vision and, therefore, of the language of art.

- City: How to interpret the meaning of ‘Urban Regeneration’ in a disciplinary sense, away from the media hype surrounding the term, and instead relate it to the new meaning of living and the need to respond to the typological and urban disintegration of the contemporary city;

- Architecture: The role of architecture as a new expressive synthesis in current cultural, social, and urban dynamics;

-

2_PROGRAMMA DEL CORSO (massimo 3.000 battute)

Starting from the general educational objectives aimed at acquiring the project as a synthesis between theoretical foundation, expression of form, and functional program, the course proposes the theme: Building for the Rectorate on the Magna Graecia University Campus in Catanzaro, a theme closely linked to the research program referred to in the agreement between the Landscape_inProgress Laboratory and UNIMGCZ.

In particular, a design application is envisaged that reflects on two aspects:

- The scale design of the ‘University Campus’, which, although originally designed by a single author, has been built in a fragmentary manner over time through the addition and, often, sporadic construction of buildings, not always in an organic relationship, both functionally and architecturally, environmentally, and in terms of landscape.

- The proposal for a building representative of the university institution - the Rectorate - capable of integrating functional and sustainability requirements with the need for form and construction, starting from its hybrid typology

.

The course focuses on integrating the theoretical and practical aspects underlying the project, divided into three phases:

- Theoretical lessons on architecture, landscape, and the contemporary city in light of new sustainability issues and the dialectic with new scenarios that require new readings and interpretative tools;

- In-depth lessons on the concept of place with reference to the specific context of the UNIMGCZ University Campus;

- Practical design experimentation through classroom exercises and a final workshop. The practical experimentation will follow the construction process of the project in its scalar, functional, and figurative meaning through the forms of drawing as forms of architecture. The exercise will be completed with the drafting of the building project for the Rectorate at the appropriate scale and a 3,000-character written report on the theoretical description of the project, its figurative and bibliographical references.

3_RISULTATI ATTESI

The expected results relate to the acquisition of the project idea as a complexity of integrated relationships: territorial, landscape, urban, functional, and environmental, which find their most direct and significant synthesis in architectural form.

In this sense, students are required to use and master specific disciplinary tools which, starting from an awareness of architectural, urban, and territorial processes, are capable of responding to evolving expressive connotations in tune with current changes and a critical capacity capable of dialoguing without simplification with productive and technological systems.

Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione (knowledge and understanding);

Through theoretical study of the contemporary city and design examples of buildings of a similar type, students will acquire knowledge of national and international scenarios, with a dual focus on awareness of the field of investigation and critical understanding of significant experiences.

Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate (applying knowledge and understanding);

The course proposal of a theme and therefore of a concrete and subjective design action in the field of institutional architecture constitutes the field of verification and application of the theoretical and practical knowledge assigned in the first phase of the course.

Autonomia di giudizio (making judgements);

Independent judgment is tested and verified through the specific design of a building intended to house the Rector's Office in its functional, spatial, and contextual variables. These variables constitute parameters for evaluating the critical abilities of the student's choices in the context of awareness of the context and the university campus.

Abilità comunicative (communication skills);

The student's communication skills will be measured on several levels: use of forms of invention and representation of the project in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional terms, based on the idea that the drawing writes and does not transcribe the project. These, together with the ability to organize and lay out the project in its form of representation for the communication and transmission of figurative, spatial, and structural content.

Capacità di apprendere (learning skills).

The final exam will assess the degree of linguistic, compositional, and procedural autonomy that the student has acquired in the various stages of the course, in the field of architecture and architectural composition, through the specific theme, which is the subject of practical experimentation.
