In the modern age, the Mediterranean coasts were devastated by raids that poured their violence on the cities and the land. It is a phenomenon rarely witnessed by conventional iconographic corpus, but present in “private” stories and drawings, like those of travellers. These convey the reality of the places and the difficult history of their populations, including the scars of war and abandonment: degraded fortifications, uncovered houses, abandoned fields.
