abstract:
There is inside “grecanica area” an underlying culture in which the influence of the Hellenistic world continued to persist even after the fall of the Byzantine domination in Calabria. Following the floods that affected the area between 1951 and 1973, a lot of this towns have been totally abandoned (Roghudi, Ghorio di Roghudi, Amendolea Vecchia and Pentedattilo), others have been processes of gradual depopulation (Gallicianò). The villages “grecanici” have similar characteristics to those of other neighboring towns. They are often characterized by particular conditions of localization that have led to a closure to the outside, favoring the persistence of linguistic and cultural traditions. The spontaneity of the buildings and the use of an vernacular architectural language do not produce particularly valuable architectures but reveal often a widespread quality and constructive knowledge not contaminated by the practices and vices of contemporary buildings. In recent time, to the historic architecture overlapped buildings, often incomplete, which clash with the harmony simple and essential of the context. Also on the constructive side, as well as linguistically, you record the progressive abandonment of local traditions, in favor of decontextualized and uncritical adherence to a globalized culture which, together with the language of the ancient fathers, dropping into oblivion sensitivity and harmony intrinsic of millenary.
