Immaginari perduti. Isole del Mediterraneo

The islands, in the Mediterranean, are first of all physical dimension, imaginary dimensions and places of the myth. They are a heritage of vision. Metaphors of elsewhere for travelers, places of necessity and need for those who live there. An island is classified on the basis of insularity, insularism, isolation characteristics that denote its physical and social consistency. This study investigates the Mediterranean islands that do not exceed 10 kmq in area. Small inhabited and uninhabited islands, on which anthropic traces are however evident. Islands, containers of objects, factories of cultures and places of contamination. The goal is to make the identity of each island apparent through the landmark that exhibits them and denotes their characters. The study criteria adopted concern the individuation of characterizing elements according to position, category, hierarchy and time. Additionally graphic coding criteria allow, in a synthesis of the sign, recognition and analysis of element. The sign becomes an act of description and interpretation of systems and components useful for the construction of a new image of places.
