Energy Efficient Paging in Cellular IoT Networks

Chapter
Publication Date:
2020
abstract:
This chapter presents solutions for paging aimed at improving energy efficiency of different Internet of things (IoT) applications in cellular-based radio access technologies such as long-term evolution for machines and narrowband-Internet of things. The initial section describes the basic power saving solutions in licensed wireless networks and introduces challenges for mobile network operators (MNOs) to provide mobile-terminated services for battery-constrained IoT devices. The following sections present different paging strategies and their application for radio access network overload control and group-oriented communications for massive machine-type-communications. The reader will not only have a good knowledge of paging mechanism itself after reading the chapter but will also have a basic understanding of what characteristics for paging MNO or IoT service provider should take into account. At the end, a look at the open issues related to paging and wake-up radio consideration is presented.
