abstract:
In his little essay Über das Pathetische (On Pathos, 1793) Friedrich Schiller asserts that “the first law of the tragic art [is] to represent suffering nature.” However, there is another law, Schiller writes, and it is “to represent the resistance of morality opposed to suffering.” The field of tension between the presentation of suffering and the presentation of the impalpable resistance to suffering is the key that grants access to the art of Peter Brandes (born 1944).
