abstract:
This study hypothesises the use of 3D digital technologies for knowledge dissemination, as applied to a case study on Byzantine traces in the Sicilian-Calabrian landscape. Digital technologies are redefning cultural accessibility, with holography positioned as an innovative tool for overcoming physical, geographical, and cognitive barriers and promoting multisensory, inclusive enjoyment. Integrating three-dimensional projections, accessible storytelling and interactive devices such as haptic feedback, voice commands, real-time subtitles and LIS translations allows the experience to be personalised, making it more accessible to audiences with different needs, including individuals with sensory or learning disabilities. With a transdisciplinary focus, the research experimented with the multilayered multimedia representation of a selection of Byzantine architecture located in marginal contexts. The project centred on holographic narration prototypes capable of restoring the cultural value of artefacts through immersive narration guided by virtual assistants. The project envisages the use of indoor holographic totems supported by an app with additional content that can be explored remotely while maintaining the importance of the on-site experience. The objective is to promote a scalable, sustainable and replicable model that can generate positive impacts in rural and peripheral areas excluded from conventional cultural circuits.
