abstract:
The interventions to existing roads are directed towards improving transportation function and safety with respect to the current situation.
In particular, road safety is the priority goal that orients the decision-makers task in selecting the best solution from among different alternatives.
Naturally it is indispensable to make use of tools able to quantify risk conditions in relation to the geometric and functional features of the different available solutions.
Nowadays in Italy there does not exist an unambiguous method of safety performance prediction, i.e. by means of the accident number prediction. On the contrary, different approaches can apply that, nevertheless, do not offer the possibility of measuring the safety performance to facilitate selection of the optimal alternative.
In light of the above, the accident prediction models of next publication in the first edition of the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) by Cooperative National Highway Research Program (NCHRP) of Transportation Research Board (TRB) will be looked at with interest.
The purpose of the HSM will be to provide information and tools, in a useful and widely accepted form, to facilitate roadway planning, design, and operational decisions based upon explicit consideration of their safety consequences.
In the present work the safety prediction procedures for roadway segments, at-grade intersections and entire two-lane highway facilities or projects are analyzed. An experimental application of this procedures to a two-lane road itinerary are carried out and some critical considerations are reported.
