L’opera di Michele Cascella nel Salone dei Mosaici della Stazione Marittima di Messina

The article has as its theme the mosaic by Michele Cascella on the convex wall of the main hall of the Stazione Marittima of Messina. The study is based on the instrumental survey, carried out with a mixed technique, and is proposed as a starting point for a series of redevelopment interventions that Direzione Operativa Trenitalia is carrying out to protect and enhance the monumental works of the Italian railway network. The presence of an iconography created in the period in which the regime had reached the peak of consensus and, to further strengthen it, dotted the entire national territory with highly symbolic figures, suggested further reflections from the point of view of the interpretation of a one of the most significant works, not only for its size, by the artist. Knowledge, analysis, interpretation and classification in the correct historical and cultural context are therefore the key words of a study which will be able to constitute the reference from which to initiate the most suitable actions to return a work of undisputed value to the community.
