BIM-Based Procedures for Testing Digital Building Envelope Models

Chapter
Publication Date:
2024
abstract:
For a long time, architectural heritage has been the focus of interest in National and European strategies aimed at overcoming problems related to uncontrolled anthropic transformations, natural disasters, and extreme weather events. In this perspective, the building envelope may be considered the first protective component of the building. It must possess specific requirements—structural, energy efficiency, technological, and environmental—that must be guaranteed and verified in the different phases of the life cycle. When starting from these issues, the research deals with the definition of BIM-based procedures for digital seismic tests of building envelope models at conceptualization and engineering phases. The proposed BIM-based procedures aim to anticipate the result of tests on real mock-ups, reduce time and costs in the design phase, and also improve performance in the use phase through predictive approaches. They combine Building Information Modeling with digitization of seismic testing, opening up to simulation procedures that promote digital twin approaches.
