The fortified city of Crotone was the administrative, political and commercial reference point for the surrounding area and the only port between Messina and Taranto between the 15th and 19th centuries. The relationship between the city and its walls deteriorated over time, becoming conflictual in the second half of the 19th century. The walls became a hostile margin to be eliminated, with inevitable repercussions on the definition of the contemporary city and the image of the historic one.
