The history of the city of Crotone in Calabria is linked to its fortification, as documented by a vast iconographic corpus that has historicized the image. It is an image changed by the removal of the city walls in the second half of the 19th century, which influenced its urban and social structure. The condition of the city does not emerge from the representation of its modern image, but instead emerges from the journals of travellers which, since the end of the 18th century, have highlighted its contradictions.
