The essay, the opening chapter of the manual design of gardens, traces the evolution of the design of the garden through a critical reading of the study conducted by means of individual models and significant works of the Western tradition. A brief historical overview from the earliest archaic forms of Middle Eastern, Egyptian garden, greek, roman, medieval, Islamic, French and Italian classic, informal English, the industrial revolution and the birth of urban public park, a window on Eastern culture and the Chinese model and Japanese, to conclude with the Central Park in New York and the birth of the concept of landscape. The essay outlines the main design characteristics of different ages, contamination and hybridization between the different models, figurative and spatial evolutions; conduct an interpretive reading through the construction of a large iconographic atlas ranging from visual arts with performances, and images of works carried out. The purpose of the essay is to identify the prominent characters of the tradition of garden design and the transmission and retention in the contemporary world.
