Cities are the places of maximum potential for change but also of maximum environmental, social and economic fra- gility. Our generation has the responsibility to set up such a change even if this process takes a very long time. How- ever, it seems that, today, the main interest is that cities are more intelligent, that they aspire to become more hi-tech, more sustainable and interconnected with little attention to the real vocations of places and the protection of public space for people. On the one hand, we are observing a sort of generalized victory of the city, with an sudden increase in the process of urbanization, assuming that within a few decades, the majority of the world’s population will live in increasingly large urban agglomerations. On the other hand, it is precisely this expansion, now unstoppable, that ends up determining the implosion of urban space into a sort of city-region that can no longer be assimilated to that set of geographical, historical and symbolic characteristics that until now have identified something as a city.
