La grafica futurista. Parole come immagini

Writing, beyond the text, is suitable to represent the links between the visual and the verbal. A century after the birth of Futurism you can look at the causes that generated the new graphics concepts through other art movements of the early twentieth century avant-garde, Dadaism, de Stijl, Suprematism, Constructivism, Bauhaus and others. The new vocabulary of typography and graphic design underwent a radical transformation made by Futurism in less than twenty years. It can be argued than the “heroic period” of modern typography began with the Futurist Manifesto published in Le Figaro, by Marinetti on 20th February 1909 and reached its peak in the early twenties. In that first authoritative and synthetic manifesto of 1909, a new concept of art and representation are defined in a clamorous tone. Futurists searched for new ways to overcome the limitations of two-dimensional drawing in order to celebrate “the revolution and the movement” by illusory visual effects.
Futurism is a coherent and organized movement that , after the death of Marinetti in 1944, was partly overcome by the future itself. However the ideals of the avant-guard movement remain a significant component of Western culture since the Second World War till today. In many commercials and films, emphasis on youth, speed, power and technology are still present.
