Hammam in the Middle East are seriously at risk, or just compromised. However, most of the hammam has not been used for many years, due to the high costs of maintenance. The Syrian hammam Yalbougha al-Nasiri in Aleppo is one of the most interesting examples – inserted in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. By originating from the Roman steam bath, was built by Mamluk Emir in mid-fifteenth century, working until the early twentieth century, and then it was restored by Department of Antiquity in 1960. In 1983, all the sanitary installations were repaired too. Inside this building you can receive all kind of well-being sensation, as in the steam room where the marble paved surfaces allow bodies to directly relax. They are also immersed in enlightened steam under the dome perforated by glass shaped eyes ‘gatnayat’ which make star patterns. Like a magical kaleidoscope the play of light and shadow is ever changing. Therefore, here it is what you can find inside a hammam, which can hardly be said unless drawings and images.
