Contents

Program of the course

The course introduces the fundamental concepts related to object-oriented programming, using JAVA as the reference language.

1 - Computer Architecture (1.5 CFU)

  • Elements of Boolean Algebra. Representation of information in a computer.
  • The Von Neumann Machine. RAM, CPU, PC, ALU.

2 - Information Representation (1.5 CFU)

  • Representation of characters, integers and real numbers. The notion of algorithm. Algorithmic problem solving. Correctness and other properties of algorithms.
  • The hardware and software, the basic software, the operating system, multitasking systems and multiuser systems, the Windows operating system, the file system. Compilers interpreters and other utility software.

Expected Results

Knowledge and Understanding: Knowledge of the fundamental concepts related to the representation and processing of information by a computer.

Ability to Apply Knowledge: Ability to correctly describe the architecture of an electronic computer and apply the fundamental concepts related to the representation and processing of information.

Making Independent Judgments: To pass the exam, students must independently answer theoretical and analytical open-ended questions and are therefore required to develop independent judgment regarding the completeness, depth, and accuracy of their freely given answers.

Communication Skills: Students are able to illustrate the theoretical and technical rationales underlying computer architecture and information representation and processing.

Learning Skills: After passing the exam, students are able to independently learn other basic features of computer architecture.

Assessment and evaluation methods: there is a single exam for the 9 credits consisting of Module 1 and Module 2, and the description of its methods is given in the Module 2 information sheet.
