Date/time interval

Primo Ciclo Semestrale (22/09/2025 - 05/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

In order to achieve the expected results for the course program and the proposed experimentation, the didactic offer divided into the different activities pursues the following qualifying educational objective: acquire the theoretical foundations of the science of representation, indispensable for understanding, analyzing and communication of architectural space.

As regards the specific educational objectives, they consist in learning the notions necessary for the geometric interpretation of shapes and the ability to correctly represent architectural artefacts. A further specific training objective consists in the ability to communicate the project in a critical and creative way, while respecting the shared graphic rules and conventions.

Course Prerequisites

The course, placed in the first year, does not include particular prerequisites necessary for the student. However, school knowledge of elementary geometry and Euclidean is required.

Teaching Methods

COURSE STRUCTURE AND TEACHING

Lessons: (classroom hours/year): 40

Exercises: (classroom hours/year): 10

Practical activities: (classroom

hours/year): 10

CALENDAR OF TRAINING ACTIVITIES

One weekly lesson/practice of 5 consecutive hours in the first semester.

AUTONOMOUS ACTIVITY OF THE STUDENT

The course provides for the periodic delivery of exercises relating to the theoretical contents covered. Furthermore, the creation of final graphic drawings of the training course is foreseen, on an individually assigned theme, of geometric analysis, and application tables of the various methods of representation (orthogonal, axonometric, perspective projections. The autonomous work of the student, therefore, it will consist of in-depth analysis/study on the bibliography (theoretical part), in the preparation of tests (experimentation) and in the preparation of exam drawings.

Assessment Methods

At the beginning of the course, a test will be proposed to verify the basic knowledge. During the course, periodic checks (exercises with evaluation) are scheduled on topics assigned by the teacher. Furthermore, verification meetings of the assigned thematic papers will be carried out.

Examination methods: Theory/Practice.

The exam is individual. It can be accessed after verifying the minimum attendance required by the course and after passing a graphic pre-exam, held before each exam session. The papers produced during the course and the topics covered in the theoretical lessons will be the subject of the oral exam.

Lesson notes

Contents

To acquire the ability to develop the architectural project - the first educational objective of the architect - it is essential to know the theoretical foundations of the Science of Representation and the Methods of Representation (Double Orthogonal Projections, Axonometric and Perspective Projections, Shadow Theory). Knowledge of Descriptive Geometry is fundamental because it facilitates the definition of shapes, their metric-dimensional control and their arrangement in space. Once acquired, the student will be able to visualize the architectural space, existing and/or projected, communicating the essential data.

The teaching will be divided into theoretical lessons, laboratory exercises, study seminars, according to a teaching calendar divided into three sections. The first phase will be dedicated to the fundamentals of projective geometry: notion of projective space; projective properties; projection and section operations; projectivity, perspectivity and homology; conic projections and cylindrical projections. The second phase will address the applicative aspects of descriptive geometry: orthogonal projections; axonometric projections, perspective projections and general concepts on the theory of shadows. The third phase will be dedicated to the techniques of representation: eidotypes and freehand representation techniques; scale ratios; graphic and cartographic conventions; graphic techniques for communication; notes on digital drawing. More specifically, the following disciplinary areas will be developed:

- theoretical and practical study of the projective foundations of architectural representation;

- analogical drawing of geometric shapes and architectural elements;

- freehand drawing as a tool for knowledge and understanding of architecture;

- study of the fundamentals of digital drawing and application of the knowledge learned to the construction of a three-dimensional geometric pattern;

- digital drawing in 2d and 3d of an architecture or an architectural element.

EXPECTED RESULTS

Learn the fundamentals of representation and the rules of graphic communication.

Understand the space and control the shapes through graphic verification processes.

Expand the potential of creative imagination through the verification tools offered by the science of representation: orthogonal, axonometric and perspective projections.

Communicate the architectural project through technical graphic conventions and the most effective techniques of graphic representation.
