Course Objectives

The exposition of private law and the Roman civil procedural system, from the origins of Rome to Justinian, aims to provide students with a basic understanding of the individual institutions as reconstructed by Roman jurists and to facilitate the learning of the technical vocabulary and concepts that have profoundly influenced modern law.

By the end of the course, students should achieve the following learning objectives:

- clear knowledge of the conceptual and theoretical foundations of Roman private law;

- ability to identify sources and interpret them in concrete situations, through the historical analysis of legislative texts and public and private acts, both contractual and procedural;

- ability to argue and express one's thoughts clearly and using legal language;

- ability to use the specialized language specific to jurisprudence;

- ability to express the contents of the scientia iuris, developing a critical assessment of the main historical-legal dynamics analyzed during the course and using appropriate technical-legal language.
