Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the role of quantitative data in the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies.
  2. Specify, estimate and interpret linear regression models (simple and multiple) in economic and social policy contexts.
  3. Correctly use and interpret non-linear regression models (logit, probit, count models, Tobit, log-linear models, etc.) applied to public policy issues.
  4. Assess model adequacy through diagnostic tools and hypothesis testing.
  5. Understand the basic concepts of data mining / machine learning for public policy (classification, regression, clustering, model selection, overfitting).
  6. Develop empirical analyses on real datasets in the fields of labour, education, health, welfare, etc., and write short policy reports.
