Luigi Vanvitelli a Siena e i disegni di progetto per la Chiesa di S. Agostino

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2017
abstract:
Luigi Vanvitelli'sproject drawings for the riconfiguration of S. Augustine's Churchin Siena 1747, are attached to the documentation regarding the cause of intent by the Augustinian Priest against the assigned contractors to do the project, offers in the occasion to reflect upon Vanvitelli intervention in Siena, marginally inquired into. The analysis of the unpublished drawings, the detail of the archival documentation plus the comparision with the existing architecture, have allowed us to clarify once and for all wich was Vanvitelli's original idea for the riconfiguration of the medieval space of the building. An idea where models, repertoires and compositional schemes are sought after by the architect himself and are an identification of his production. A project which was immediately after an initial one entrusted to local wokers and blocked to the beginning, of which we have however the unpublished drawings, that we present here. Vanvitelli's project was grafted into the initial one, partly altered by Antonio Galli Bibbiena's intervention in 1752, who modified the setting in the transept arrangement. Notwithstanding the transformations and some inaccuracies found in the overall execution of the work, the big hall of the church clearlybshows the characteristics of the vanvitellian architecture.
