Un committenza chigiana tra Roma e Siena: progetti per la chiesa di San Girolamo in Campansi.

The history of the Franciscan Monastery church in Campansi, Siena, where many members of the Chigi family spent their monastic lives, is closely linked to the Siena family who trough their most eminent members and architects, promoted the interventions regarding the complex during the second half of the seventeenth century. After the foundation and the construction of the original church, during the second half of the fifteenth century, an important renewal phase was promoted during Alexander VII's pontificate (1655-1667), by the pope's commission in Siena, like the accomplishment of the Vote Chapel, the new architectural and urban lay-out of the St. Raymond to the Refuge church and the new baroque set-up in the Cathedral square. In the context where relationships between Rome and Siena are consolidated, the project for the Nun's Church in Campansi is inserted by the Siena architect, Benedetto Giovannelli Orlandi, datable around the sixsties of the seventeenth century. The project, that affirmed architect proposed in the unpublished drawings kept in the Chigi archive of the Vatican Library had an evident baroque sensibility, not only in its architectural dimension but also in the urban lay-out; evident scho of Roman influence. The project, which remained only on paper, had it been implemented, would have sensibly chamged the character of the city area in which the original Franciscan complex falls, offering Siena a renovated space, where the experience matured in Roman baroque, would have been declined to the moderate rules of a controlled Tuscan tradition.
