Abstract:
The extraordinary archaeological discovery of the suburban villa of a late-republican jurist on the river Aniene in Rome is illustrated. It is proposed to identify the villa builder with Quintus Mucius Scaevola, who died in 82 BC. It illustrates the fresco that reproduces a papyrus with a memorandum sumptuarium, devoid of practical value, but intended to convey an ideological message of Catonian austerity and respect for the lex Fannia sumptuaria. In addition, an explanation is given of the painted representation of two waxed tablets, which attribute the invention of the general archetype of the formulas with certain intentio to a jurist Mucius Scaevola, whose first name is not indicated.
