Abstract:
High-speed rail (HSR) systems have progressively gained importance in the global context. The reasons for this increased relevance include environmental sustainability and operational efficiency, as well as contributing to economic development and sustainable social mobility. These elements lead to more competitiveness between connected regions that experience a fairer distribution of development opportunities. The presence of HSR generates three different transport demand components: diverted demand, induced demand, economic growth demand. This paper presents an experimental generation model usable as the first step of a more articulated experimental model of evaluation of the travel demand induced by the presence of HSR services in under-developed areas, applied to the Rome-Reggio Calabria relationship (Southern Italy), based on a reduced sample of users composed of students and professors. The aim of this model is to obtain the induced generation for the study area of Reggio Calabria. The general objective of the research is to analyse the effects of high-speed rail systems on the variation of travel frequency.
